Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake Hits Chile

In one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded at least 214 people are known to be dead, and many more outside of Chile could be affected by the tsunami it triggered. You can make a donation to several relief agencies here.

Two devastating earthquakes only a month apart. God help us.

Zeldman: You Can’t Copyright a Tweet

Zeldman:

Contrary to popular belief and Twitter’s terms of service, you cannot copyright a Tweet. Under US law, copyright is granted on publication to “original works of authorship” finalized in “fixed forms of expression” but this does not extend to names, titles, or short phrases

I had wondered about this. By no stretch am I a law expert, but I figured Tweets would be held in a similar legal light as an in-person conversation.

DF: Tits and Apps

John Gruber gives his view on why Apple removed nearly all of the “sexy apps” from the App Store. The reason? Apple wanted to maintain their brand, and these apps were junky and distasteful.

Variations on Normal

Just like it says on the tin; crazy.

I understand why they did this, but really, who cares?

John Gruber’s Talk at Macworld 2010

Gruber’s video is the second one down on the right. It’s an hour long but worth listening to. Thoughtful as always.

Excellent advertising by Panasonic for their new beard trimmer.

These are even better than the last one I linked to.

Apple Now Baring ‘Overtly Sexual’ Apps from the App Store

iPhone developers ChilliFresh posted that Apple had sent and email to inform them that their app, Wobble iBoobs, had been yanked from the App Store. The email stated that Apple had changed policy and were removing all “overtly sexual” content due to customer complaints.
Here is the email at length:

The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.

We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you believe you can make the necessary changes so that Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) complies with our recent changes, we encourage you to do so and resubmit for review.

Sincerely,
iPhone App Review

This seems like a ham-fisted attempt at further censorship by Apple. As of the time of this writing, 5000 (and counting) of the “adult” themed applications in the App Store have been removed, but not all. Playboy’s official app still remains. Which to me suggests Apple will always play nicer with “big money” corporations than with independent developers.

Web Designers Who Can’t Code

Elliot Jay Stocks believes web designers should have some basic understanding of HTML/CSS.

Largely I disagree, but his request isn’t unreasonable either. HTML isn’t hard. That said, entirely right-brained people like myself have a tendency to make a mess with code.

I can see the end result. I’m just not sure I can get you there.

Facebook Overtakes Yahoo: Now the Second Most Visited Site in U.S.

This says more for Yahoo’s downfall than it does for Facebook’s rise.
