Ihnatko on iPad
Ihnatko calls it “pure innovation.”
Pogue on iPad
David Pouge got 12 hours of video playback on this device. Ultimately he likes it.
Mossberg on iPad
If people see the iPad mainly as an extra device to carry around, it will likely have limited appeal. If, however, they see it as a way to replace heavier, bulkier computers much of the time—for Web surfing, email, social-networking, video- and photo-viewing, gaming, music and even some light content creation—it could be a game changer the way Apple’s iPhone has been.
Desk Phone Dock
My mother – someone who does not use cellphones – even thought this was a good idea. I agree. It looks sharp too.
RDM:The fallacy of Flash – Why Adobe’s Ideological War with Apple is Bankrupt
Steve Jobs isn’t going to relent and turn around Apple’s strategy for the iPad and iPhone OS into a machine to enrich Adobe just because some gossip columnist is cranking out emotionally charged complaints citing publishers upset that they might have to learn new skills in order to participate in the profitable software markets Apple is creating, rather than staying in the profitless, dead-end, closed binary Flash+web status quo content market that has no business model other than display ad monetization.
Bingo. It really is that simple. Stay with Flash and pay Adobe for the privilege of using it and it may not work on every popular platform (namely iPhone/iPad). Or you can use standards compliant technologies that work in all standards compliant browsers, with the added benefit of not having to pay licensing fees to Adobe. The only people who could possibly be upset by this are people making money off of Flash – Adobe.
idsgn: The Mist Clears
I’ll be honest, I liked the current/old can. Some, including this article, accused it of being “generic.” Instead, I think the new design feels generic. It feels like a rushed attempt to replace the old design, that apparently someone complained about.
Teabonics
Here is a Flickr gallery of nuts who can’t spell.
Neven Mrgan on Pixel Art
Great advice. I’m jealous of his abilities.
Apple Posts iPad Guided Tour Videos
They’re not hard to watch and more importantly, make you want one.
Brand New: Snapper Snaps Sam
I have to admit, I like the new Snapper logo and I probably shouldn’t. That said, it’s an improvement over the abysmal old logo/mascot.
iTunes 9.1 Coming Soon, to have eBook Support and Other Enhancements
MacRumors is reporting that they have received information claiming Apple is preparing to release iTunes 9.1 around the time of the iPad launch. One major enhancement will be better organization of “book” content.
According to the source, the existing “Audiobooks” entry in the iTunes Source list will be replaced with a broader “Books” section. A similar change will made to the sources for managing content on connected devices such as iPhones, iPods, and iPads. The revamped “Books” section for connected devices will reportedly display all book content compatible with a given device for easy content management.
This iTunes update may also include enhancements to Genius mixes, giving users more control of the songs being played.
In the updated iTunes, users will have more control over Genius Mixes, including the ability to rename mixes and rearrange them by dragging. Users will also be able to delete Genius Mixes by right clicking on them. Genius Mixes will also reportedly be available as sources for the iTunes DJ shuffle feature.
Lastly, iTunes 9.1 is said to have a different layout of the device summary panes and the ability to down-convert their music to 128kbps AAC when syncing music to devices. This features used in current iPod Shuffles allows users to cram more content on their devices at the cost of sound quality. Most users wont’t notice the difference, and the original 256 kbps audio file will remain untouched on the user’s computer. That means if you ever want to convert back up to the full 256 kbps version on your device, you can do so with little effort.
RDM: Windows Phone 7 – Microsoft’s Third Failed Attempt to be Apple
The problem for Microsoft is that Windows Phone 7 won’t arrive until the end of the year at the very soonest. By then, Apple will have had the new iPhone 4.0 out for six months. Additionally, WP7 is really targeting the features of iPhone 2.0 from 2008. There’s a reason why Apple does not continue to sell iPhone 2.0 software: it’s outdated.
Bingo. I suspect Windows Phone 7 or whatever they’re calling it won’t make much of a splash in the market. The media however will swear it’s the next big thing.
How to Make an HTML5 iPhone App
Good advice. I suspect HTML5 coupled with “PastryKit” John Gruber uncovered, will be a more developer-friendly way of getting software on the iPhone than Apple’s current ham-fisted gated App Store approach. That is, at least for basic apps that don’t need low-level system privileges to function. Those will still have to go through the App Store approval process.
More on the Tea Klan
I am a liberal and this is an admittedly liberal op-ed by Frank Rich, but I think it holds true regardless of what side of the isle you are on.
If Obama’s first legislative priority had been immigration or financial reform or climate change, we would have seen the same trajectory. The conjunction of a black president and a female speaker of the House — topped off by a wise Latina on the Supreme Court and a powerful gay Congressional committee chairman — would sow fears of disenfranchisement among a dwindling and threatened minority in the country no matter what policies were in play. It’s not happenstance that Frank, Lewis and Cleaver — none of them major Democratic players in the health care push — received a major share of last weekend’s abuse. When you hear demonstrators chant the slogan “Take our country back!,” these are the people they want to take the country back from.
America is quickly figuring out that it doesn’t need to be ran solely by old white men. The Tea Klan can’t stop what’s coming.
The Tea Party: Do As I Say Not As I Do
This is just blatant hypocrisy.
DF: Generals’ War
John Gruber suggests that the “war” between Apple and Google is being fought amongst the executives of both companies, and not the engineers.
I think he’s right.
David Lynch on iPhone [UPDATED]
News to me. David Lynch made similar comments to Cameron’s a few years ago. I would say no one listens to David Lynch because he’s so goddamn weird anyway.
UPDATE: Also, the argument I would make against both of these directors is that the iPhone was not intended to be a full movie experience. It just offers that functionality for convenience sake. I understand movies are, and always have been, made for theatre viewing but the market has moved past that notion.
Suck it up boys.
Cameron: ‘Watching Avatar on an iPhone is Dumb’
Well, my knee-jerk reaction would be to tell Cameron to kiss my ass, but I do respect him for his finickiness regarding the distribution of specific Avatar prints to match a theatre’s layout to ensure the best experience.
Apple to Introduce ‘iAd’ a Mobile Ad Platform on April 7th?
MediaPost is reporting that Apple is preparing to introduce ‘iAd’ on April 7th, and is reportedly a “personalized, mobile advertising system”.
It is believed that iAd was built off of the Quattro, which was a mobile ad company Apple snapped up in January for around $275 million. Little more is currently known about this development.
“Everyone will be following this very closely,” says Josh Lovison, the mobile lead at Interpublic’s Emerging Media Lab, adding: “Given the way that Apple is able to package things up, with very slick presentations, it will be interesting to see what they do with that advertising.”
If this comes to fruition, the brewing war between Google and Apple would surly come to a head. Google is an advertising company at heart, and if Apple starts to encroach on their turf there will be trouble. In fact, it is believed Google bought Admob simply to keep it out of Apple’s hands.
With all that said, I’ll believe this whole “iAd” thing when I see it. It just feels like something “tacky” Apple would stay out of. Who knows, they may pull it off with their usual style.
Dan Lyons Switches Positions on the iPad
Proving once again Dan Lyons is a fucking hack.
